Happy Day Cafe recently opened their Vancouver location at Kingsway and Joyce. I've been there for their traditional HK style breakfast and it was alright, no real complaints.
We decide to give the dinner a try. They offer the combo fair which is typical in causal canton style restaurants. It works out to be around $14 a dish and the portions are pretty massive.
With our order, it also came with the soup of the day which was an oxtail soup with carrots. The soup was somewhat bland but probably because it doesn't have MSG (Update:wow, there was a lot of MSG in the food, hardly able to sleep from it).
Next dish that arrived was the deep fried halibut nuggets. It was on the salty side and if you hate fish with bones, don't order this. You'll be spitting out fish bones the entire time.
Followed by the egg tofu with broccoli swimming in a egg white scallop sauce. This dish was on par with the other restaurants I tried.
Finally, our main dish, the lobster with rice, drenched in some sauce that I cannot describe other than moist. The rice was similar to sticky rice, it seemed very glutenous. Lobster was enjoyable but not so much the rice which we had to pay an extra $12 for.
To top it off, the best part of the meal, hot coconut tapioca soup.
It wasn't amazing or something I would recommend my friends to try. Breakfast on the other hand is worth trying if HK style breakfast is your thing. One thing to keep in mind, the soup they use in their macaroni breakfast is not traditional in the sense of taste. Hope you enjoyed looking at the massive photos of the food. Thanks for reading!
