My father recently recommended that I check out Fondway Cafe behind Metrotown. They're situated on the ground floor of the new condos that have been built. Located at 4462 Beresford Street in Burnaby, BC.
The first thing you notice when you walk in is the unique style the cafe has. It reminds me of an antique horder that finally couldn't store it anymore and decided to open a cafe. The decor was another reason why I came here in the first place.
I came here for one thing only and it was to try out their waffles. I've been having a craving for waffles since I started my new eating regiment and cheat day was planned out thoroughly. So I ordered "The Waffle Party". Party for one, no shame, I do it all the time so don't judge. When it was ready, I was ready to demolish it. My knife dug into the waffle and I noticed the fluffiness of it, my mouth was ready. First thoughts from the first bite, waffle is premade. It's not warm, it's not hot, it's rather cold. Taste is good though, nice portions of crunch to fluff ratio. Could be perfect if it came fresh off the grill and to be honest, I'd be ok with waiting a bit longer for hot waffles.
The waffle was served with a variety of fruit which included strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and a banana drizzled with a home made caramel. Now I say it's home made caramel because I could taste a certain burnt flavour in it. The fruit itself was pleasant but it was hard to ignore the burnt taste of the caramel. My taste buds could also be off kilter so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. It also came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that was delicious. The waffle platter was $11.00.
They offer other things such as a huge variety of tea, hot and cold drinks, green matcha cheese cake, earl grey cake, sandwiches, macaroons, and other pastries. Please note that when you step in the door, the drink menu is actually on the right hand corner away from the counter. I didn't notice the menu until I paid and sat down for my food. The overall placements of the menu could be improved a bit for better understanding.
I can't comment on the quality of the drinks or anything else but the service was good. They were warm to the idea of me taking photos for the purpose of a review after I completed my food. I'd definitely go back based on some of the photos I've seen on Yelp. Give it a shot and let me know what you think of Fondway Cafe.
